Singkil is a dance that takes its name from the bells worn on the ankles of the Muslim princess. It's one of the oldest of Filipino dances. Singkil recounts the epic legend of the "Darangan" of the Maranao people of Mindanao. The dancers wear straight, solemn faces and maintain a dignified pose while dancing at a slow pace. The music gradually progresses to a faster tempo while the dancers skillfully manipulate their fans, representing winds. The dancers weave expertly through criss-crossed bamboos.

The 16x20 canvas of Singkil was a birthday gift to my niece who, for several years before going off to university, belonged to a Philippine-American dance Troup in Washington, DC. Hard to believe it's been 20+ years since she was their Singkil princess. When she opened her gift, she nearly fell over with waves of fond memories which made her teary eyed. As her Ninang, not sure if I can top this gift which earned immediate sentimental value with her. This is the 2nd piece of artwork I've purchased from Ethel. The quality of her products/artwork and customer service are both top notch! All done with care.
