The Santo Nino

$15.00

As difficult as it is, sometimes we have to accept all the good, bad, and ugly aspects of our culture. It’s what makes us Filipino.

If you’re a devout Christian, this may have some deep importance to you. It represents your strong Catholic faith, traditions, and your goal to be a good person in life.

On the other hand, the Santo Nino may represent something dark and unsettling like the colonization of the Spaniards onto our fertile lands in the 1500s, which till this day, turned the Philippines upside down.

I’ve always wanted to illustrate the Santo Nino because it does represent both the positive and negative aspects of my life. It reminded me of my youth when I was living in the Philippines during the 80s. Seeing these types of statues in processions were like fantastical moments for me. When I was 5-8yo, I had this naive perception that being Catholic meant that if I died the next day, it’s ok, because I’d go to a heaven that looks like a wonderland of colors, sweet fruits and beauty.

However, now that I’m older with a family of my own, my once glowing views about Christianity has faded over time. I’ve heard one too many dark, hypocrisies, and disturbing stories that do not sit right with me. Nowadays, I consider myself more of a spiritual person and I just strive to be a good citizen, and teach my kids to love and treat others with respect as they’d like to be treated. On days where I feel frustrated, I do pray to something, whether it’s Allah, God, or Buddha. I do. Maybe it’s the idea that someone still listens to me when the world around me doesn’t.

But take the Santo Nino any you way you see fit… good, bad, or ugly. Whatever it is, it’s simply a reminder of where we came from as Filipinos.
